The Origin of The Merino

The Merino is possibly most notable. It was developed on the Iberian Peninsula and raised there for many years by knowledgeable shepherds. The wool is renowned for having exceptionally fine, soft fibers that are also incredibly durable.
Serra da Estrela: Centuries of Tradition
Since the 1100s, Serra da Estrela has been the heart of Portuguese wool production. When Cistercian monks arrived from France in the 12th century, they recognized the region's perfect conditions for raising sheep and established the foundations of a wool industry that continues to this day.
The high mountain pastures, abundant fresh water, and isolated valleys created ideal conditions for developing superior wool. Over nine centuries, shepherds in this region refined their practices, selecting sheep that produced the finest, most durable wool fibers.
Traditionally, shepherds would lead their flocks on seasonal migrations, traveling through mountains in spring for shearing. This ancient practice, known as transhumance, connected these regions and resulted in wool with distinctive qualities shaped by Portugal's varied landscapes and climates.

Our merino wool is carefully chosen and sourced from these diverse Portuguese regions, with special attention to Serra da Estrela's centuries-old traditions, then transformed into premium fabrics at family-run mills using techniques passed down through generations.
